South Africa has recorded another 17 412 confirmed Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, along with 339 new Covid-19 related deaths – taking the death toll to 33 163.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of 10 January, the country recorded a total of 1 231 597 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 27.1% of the total confirmed cases, which translates to 333 842; KwaZulu-Natal recorded 252 115 cases; Western Cape 241 001 cases; and the Eastern Cape recorded 180 689 confirmed cases to date.

To date, 7 183 893 tests have been completed, with 63 046 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, according to Mkhize.

As per active confirmed cases of Covid-19, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most with 92 634, followed by the Western Cape with 46 411, and Gauteng with 46 272.

Mkhize also reported a further 339 Covid-19 related deaths, of which 113 were recorded in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, 77, KwaZulu-Natal, 71, Gauteng, 28, Free State, 19, Limpopo, 14, Mpumalanga, 10 and seven new fatalities were reported in the Northern Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.

  • Western Cape – 8 187
  • Gauteng – 6 170
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 5 241
  • Free State – 2 295
  • Mpumalanga – 707
  • North West – 703
  • Limpopo – 677
  • Northern Cape – 444

The country also recorded 966 368 recoveries (78.4%) as of 10 January.

Gauteng, as the most affected province in terms of total confirmed cases, recorded almost 300 000 recoveries, with the Western Cape edging towards the 200 000 mark.
