The City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department will host its third virtual public webinar on 16 April 2021 to encourage and record feedback on the draft Johannesburg Inner City Transport Master Plan on creating an accessible and inclusive public transport system.

The proposed master plan provides a framework to improve and transform the inner city transport system to ensure that it is well connected, safe and offers reliable public transport, rationalised vehicular routes and pleasant walkable pedestrian pathways.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said to achieve the City’s vision of an accessible, diverse and inclusive inner city that is vibrant and walkable, the City endeavours to create an efficient public transport system with the support of public and private stakeholders.

Over the next 10 years, Johannesburg’s inner city will move towards a green, walkable and multi-layered public transport system by placing emphasis on the commuter (pedestrian) experience.

“Two public consultation sessions have already been held. They attracted stakeholders ranging from business and other interested parties who gave inputs, comments and suggestions for the plan under review,” said MMC Makhuba.

The sessions were held in the form of 22 focus groups, a public webinar, opportunities to submit more information online and six follow-up meetings were held with stakeholders who requested to engage further.

The plan is to make the consultation process as inclusive as possible. The public consultation process has been used as a platform for residents to submit ideas and proposals and as a means to participate in debates around the proposed framework for the Johannesburg Inner City Transport Master Plan.

“Through the master plan, the department will restructure and integrate the City through developing transit-oriented development nodes, enhance safety, comfort, and legibility through bold intervention to improve street environments,” said MMC Makhuba.

The third session will afford residents the opportunity to engage documents and submit more comments and inputs that will be carefully considered. The framework for the master plan development will be reviewed and presented to Council for consideration and approval.

The virtual public webinar will be held Friday, 16 April 2021, at 10am. Register to receive an electronic link or to attend physically: Wendy Mashitiso -WendyMa@joburg.org.za.  RSVP by 14 April 2021 (limited places available due to Covid-19 regulations - first come, first serve).
