Business Unity South Africa (Busa) expressed grave concern over persistent workplace discriminatory practices highlighted in the recent Court findings against Associated Motor Holdings relating to racial and gender-based discrimination.

In 2017 Busa launched its Business Approach to Black Economic Transformation for Inclusive Growth, that identified the need to embed transformation in business as a key element. As part of the Approach, Busa recognised the necessity of raising awareness and decisively addressing workplace practices that may exclude and limit the participation of historically disadvantaged people. Further to this approach, Busa stated that discrimination, be it direct or indirect, has no place in the workplace, particularly given the country’s history.

“Businesses should take a serious look at their organisational practices and root out behaviour that does not embrace diversity and give effect to the fundamental right to equality and dignity,” stated Busa CEO Tanya Cohen.

BUSA stated that racial and gender-based discrimination remains a significant stumbling block in the attainment of inclusive economic growth. Unless we can harness the full potential of all South Africans in the workplace, we will not be able to achieve the levels of productivity and competitiveness that we are capable of as a country, stated Busa.
