Budget season kicks off in Western Cape Legislature

This week the budget season will kickstart in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. The budget period is a jampacked, three week process of tabling, analysing and deliberating on the Provincial Budget.

On Tuesday, 14 March 2023, the Provincial Minister of Finance, Mireille Wenger, will table the Western Cape Budget at 14:15. The budget speech can viewed here.

The Budget Speech will be directly followed by a meeting of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Budget Committee where the full Budget will be presented to Members.

Over the next two weeks, the Standing Committees of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will analyse, deliberate and finalise reports on the individual budgets of Provincial Departments. The details of the individual analyses are as follows:

  • Wednesday, 15 March 2023: Premier (9:00), Environmental Affairs & Development Planning (9:00), Community Safety (14:00), and Agriculture (14:00)
  • Thursday, 16 March 2023: Cultural Affairs & Sport (9:00), Local Government (9:00), Mobility (14:00), and Western Cape Provincial Parliament (14:00)
  • Friday, 17 March 2023: Provincial Treasury (8:00), Education (9:00), Economic Opportunities & Tourism (13:00), and Social Development (14:00)
  • Monday, 20 March 2023: Health (9:00) and Infrastructure (9:00)

On Monday, 27 March 2023 the Legislature will debate the Main Budget followed by the Budget Votes debates for each Department. Details are as follows:

  • Tuesday, 28 March 2023: Premier, Agriculture, Infrastructure, Environmental Affairs & Development Planning, Mobility, Social Development and Provincial Parliament
  • Wednesday, 29 March 2023: Cultural Affairs & Sport, Provincial Treasury, Economic Opportunities & Tourism, Education, Health, Community Safety
