Leading global law firm Baker McKenzie has further expanded its M&A and Tax practices in Africa with three senior appointments in August. Two partners were appointed in the Corporate/M&A Practice, and a senior executive joined the Firm’s Tax practice.

Janet MacKenzie joined Baker McKenzie in Johannesburg as a partner in the firm’s Corporate/M&A Practice. She joined the firm from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr where she was a director and head of their Convergence and New Media practice. Janet has over 20 years of experience in advising on all legal and regulatory aspects pertaining to telecommunications, broadcasting, media and entertainment law. She has represented numerous major international and domestic corporations before parliament and the sector regulator, and has substantial expertise in the negotiation and structuring of complex transactions specific to the ICT sector.

Annuscha Pillay joined Baker McKenzie Johannesburg as Partner in the Corporate/M&A Practice. She specialises in corporate and commercial law with a particular focus on large, high-end commercial mergers and acquisitions, black economic empowerment transactions, corporate finance, mining transactions and high end, cross-border transactions.

Okkie Kellerman joined Baker McKenzie Johannesburg as a Senior Executive in the Tax Practice. He is a qualified CA (SA) and specialises in international tax (with special emphasis on inward and outward investments and the funding of transactions such as restructurings, take-overs and mergers and acquisitions), transfer pricing, thin capitalisation, the application of international double tax agreements and exchange control regulations.

Morne van der Merwe, Managing Partner at Baker McKenzie in Johannesburg says, “These appointments form part of our strategy to grow and build on our cross border expertise in Africa. In Africa, the combination of our local knowledge and global reach is especially important given the current uncertain deal making and business environment. Being able to deal with this uncertainty means having lawyers in the correct practice groups who have relevant industry expertise, as well as exposure to the international cross-border environment. We hope that this is the beginning of a very happy career at Baker McKenzie for Annuscha, Janet and Okkie .”
