The African National Congress Commission on Religious Affairs has noted concerns raised by the South African Council of Churches (SACC) regarding the formation of the National Interfaith Leaders Council (NILC).

The Commission believes that it is important that unity in action prevails amongst all faith-based organisations in the interest of nation building and service to the people.

The Commission has a long standing working relationship with the SACC and other faith-based organisations. We strongly believe that the differences that might exist cannot be insurmountable. The Commission will engage with the SACC and NILC to address concerns that they might have, in order to eliminate any obstacles that may impede greater unity of the religious sector.

The Commission has already requested meetings with the SACC, the National Religious Leaders Forum (NRLF) and the NILC to consider new developments and opportunities they present.

The meeting between the Commission and the leadership of the SACC is scheduled for September 18th at the Chief Albert Luthuli House in Johannesburg.

We are confident that the planned meetings with the SACC, NRLF and NILC will enable parties to find one another and hammer out a formula for cooperation in the interest of the membership of the various organisations and the people of SA as a whole.

Details of meetings with NILC and NRF will be communicated upon confirmation.
