The African National Congress (ANC) dips its revolutionary banner in honour of one of its most distinguished cadres and loyal veterans, Professor Stanislaus (Stan) Skumbuzo Mzilankatha Sangweni, who passed on early this morning, Tuesday, 18th of May 2021. The death of Professor Sangweni marks the end of a revolutionary life that was genuinely dedicated to the liberation of the people of South Africa.
He joined the revolutionary movement at a time when it was extremely dangerous to do so. He belonged to that generation of freedom fighters who were prepared to lay down their lives in pursuit of a free and democratic South Africa.
This stalwart of our movement spent 30 years in exile living in Holland, Swaziland, Zambia, Kenya and Ethiopia. His house became home to many South African exile communities in Zambia and Kenya in the 1970s and 1980s. He provided shelter to the 1976 youth who chose to swell the ranks of the ANC.
Professor Sangweni served the movement with distinction and selfless dedication in his various areas of deployment. He contributed enormously to the downfall of apartheid and was one of the architects of a democratic South Africa.
Professor Sangweni served as Chairperson of the Public Service Commission from 1994 to 2009.
He was a committed cadre who placed his life in the hands of the ANC until his last breath
The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the broader democratic movement. We hope they will find solace in the knowledge that the entire nation shares in their grief. We wish them strength and fortitude in this difficult time.
