ActionSA is extremely proud of the work its MMCs and caucuses did in the cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane in the little more than a year that we have been in government, where work was well underway to deliver on the promises made in our 2021 Local Government Election Manifesto to fix our cities.

Among these include helping to restoring the rule of law, advocating for insourcing of contracted workers, electing ethical leadership and helping to create jobs for our people.

In the City of Johannesburg - while we are concerned about the possible ousting mayor Mpho Phalatse due to a breakdown in negotiations by the Democratic Alliance (DA) - we celebrate the work our MMCs Funzi Ngobeni, David Tembe and Nkuli Mbundu managed to complete.

Transport MMC Ngobeni helped expand the Metrobus fleet to help ferry the some 1.5 million people making use of the service, cleared blockages to help complete Stage 1C of the Rea Vaya bus service, and helped expedite the recovery of roads since flooding in December through the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Public Safety MMC Tembe increased the number of by-law enforcement operations through the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), helped reduce road fatalities by 18% and conducted 125 drug search and seizure operations.

Meanwhile, Economic Development MMC Mbundu helped usher in a new informal trading policy, supported over 80 SMME’s through export related initiatives and helped create over 4000 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) jobs.

In the City of Tshwane, our Social Development MMC Peggy de Bruin, Economic Development MMC André le Roux and Housing and Human Settlements MMC Kgosietsile Jairus Kgosiemang continued to push for ethical and accountable governance at the city.

MMC De Bruin handed over three properties to create additional beds for homeless individuals in the city, opened a number of early childhood development (ECD) centres, and helped create over 3000 EPWP jobs.

MMC Le Roux helped facilitate business development support for SMMEs, empowered 97 youth owned enterprises and helped improve by-law compliance.

And MMC Kgosiemang helped expand access to basic sanitation in communities by installing chemical toilets and water services, while handing over 321 titles deeds to improve the lives of residents in the city.

In Ekurhuleni, where ActionSA left the coalition government in November out of a concern for declining service delivery standards, our former Community Safety MMC and caucus leader Tlhogi Moseki helped expedite the completion of a new Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) precinct, and appointed 150 new EMPD officers.

The caucus, in line with our commitment to be a constructive opposition, also advocated for the repair of sink holes in the city, assisted residents during the Boksburg explosion, and placed pressure on the coalition government to improve law and order.

ActionSA is proud of the work our MMC’s and Caucuses have done, and will continue to priotitise the interest of residents in the coalitions and councils we form part of.

It is only through ethical leadership, a core value of ActionSA, that good governance can be restored to South African cities, good service delivery implemented and the lives of our people improved.
