ActionSA wishes to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Chief Justice Raymond Zondo for his distinguished service over the past 27 years to our constitutional democracy and we celebrate his nearly three decades of upholding the rule of law and his perseverance in navigating numerous challenges which have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on our judiciary

As we acknowledge and reflect on the tenure of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, we do so with a deep sense of respect and admiration for his service to South Africa and her people, defined by notable humility and an unwavering commitment to justice and the rule of law.

Importantly, his enduring legacy is distinctly marked by the State Capture Commission and its consequential reports, the impact of which will ultimately depend on the forthcoming and long-overdue actions, as well as the political will to address its findings effectively.

ActionSA commends the Chief Justice for his demonstrable resilience in the face of personal attacks and insults, choosing instead to steadfastly fulfil his judicial responsibilities.

In offering our acknowledgment of his record, we must, however, frankly address ongoing concerns regarding the state of the judiciary under his leadership, as well as that of his predecessors. Significant issues remain unresolved, from the slow pace at which accountability is meted out within the judiciary to the disappearance of critical dockets and the concerningly low conviction rates for murder and serious violent crimes.

ActionSA believes that as we mark the end of Chief Justice Zondo’s tenure and, as of today, the start of Justice Mandisa Maya’s tenure as the first female Chief Justice, this moment should serve as a turning point, with the lessons learned driving progress and ensuring that the judiciary moves forward with renewed strength and integrity.
