From the battlefields of southern Angola to the volatile jungles of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Brigadier General Peter Sereko has proved himself a born soldier and leader. Resolute and mission-focused, he has held command at platoon, company, battalion and brigade level in the African battlespace.
 
After joining the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1986 and cutting his teeth with 21 Battalion in Angola, Sereko specialised as a tracker, later becoming an instructor. His skills were soon recognised in the new South African National Defence Force (SANDF), where he helped integrate and train the former liberation forces.
 
Sereko was deployed in various capacities with the South African peacekeeping force in the DRC, at one point leading 2 South African Infantry Battalion and playing a key role in defeating rebel groups in 2005 and 2006. He later served as commandant of the South African National Defence College and, as commander of the Light Modern Brigade, led the army’s fight against illicit mining operations.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brigadier General (Dr) Peter Sereko has had a distinguished career in the South African Army. He is the founding General Officer Commanding of the Light Modern Brigade and was the first Black former SADF Commandant of the South African National Defence College.

Antonio Garcia is a former officer in the South African Army, now a civil servant and part-time lecturer with the Open University. His research focuses on military history, biography and strategy. Garcia is the author of Botha, Smuts and the First World War(2025) with Ian van der Waag.
