The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has called for significant investment in water infrastructure, the use of modern water management technologies and strategic partnerships with global experts to help address the “water crisis” currently facing the City of Johannesburg.

UDM Gauteng Premier candidate Mthunzi Mdwaba said the City of Johannesburg municipality was failing to uphold South African’s constitutional right to safe drinking water.

He pointed out that there was no viable existing solution to the water crisis currently crippling the city.

“Years of inadequate foresight and strategic planning have left the nation ill-prepared to handle the water scarcity issues we face today. With a damning report released earlier this year highlighting the severity of the crisis, the response from the government has been lacklustre and reactive,” Mdwaba stated.

He added that the UDM was critical of government’s “inadequate” responses and lack of action plans.

“Due to population growth, a departmental study has shown that water demand will significantly outpace supply over the next two decades, predicting a 17% supply deficit by 2030. This alarming trend underscores the necessity for a complete overhaul of the nation's water management strategies,” Mdwaba said.

The UDM wants a review of South Africa’s water management policies, and comprehensive policy action to ensure a sustainable water supply.
