Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the north-east, Tajikistan to the south-east, Afghanistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the south-west. The capital and largest city is Tashkent. With a population of about 35-million people, Uzbekistan is the most populous country in Central Asia. The economy is dominated by cotton production, natural gas, gold mining and increasingly manufacturing and services. Uzbekistan is one of the world's largest cotton exporters and holds significant reserves of natural gas, uranium and gold. The currency is the Uzbek som. The country operates as a presidential republic, having gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Uzbekistan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The economy has undergone gradual liberalisation since 2016, with reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment and diversifying away from commodity dependence. Uzbekistan's strategic location along historic Silk Road trade routes continues to shape its economic and geopolitical significance in the region.
