Textiles
Textiles is the industry concerned with the design, production and distribution of yarn, cloth and clothing. The sector encompasses the processing of natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk and linen, as well as synthetic materials including polyester, nylon and acrylic. Key activities span spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing and finishing of fabrics for apparel, home furnishings, industrial applications and technical uses. Textile manufacturing is a significant employer globally, particularly in developing economies where labour-intensive production remains competitive. The industry faces growing pressure to decarbonise and adopt sustainable practices, driven by environmental concerns over water use, chemical discharge and carbon emissions. In Africa, textile production has historically been concentrated in countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia and South Africa, though the sector has contracted in many regions due to competition from Asian imports. The African Continental Free Trade Area presents opportunities for regional value-chain integration, linking cotton growers with spinners, weavers and garment manufacturers. South Africa's textile industry, centred in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, has benefited from government localisation initiatives and support programmes aimed at reviving domestic manufacturing. Innovation in the sector includes the exploration of alternative fibres such as hemp and the development of technical textiles for automotive, medical and construction applications. The industry remains a priority for industrial policy in many African countries seeking to create jobs and reduce reliance on imported finished goods.
