Sun City
Sun City is a luxury resort and entertainment complex located in North West province, South Africa, approximately 140 kilometres north-west of Johannesburg. The facility is owned and operated by Sun International and serves as the group's flagship property. Sun City comprises four hotels, including the Palace of the Lost City, two championship golf courses designed by Gary Player, a casino, a water park known as the Valley of Waves, and extensive conference and entertainment facilities. The resort spans more than 25 square kilometres and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, making it a significant tourism destination in southern Africa. Sun City hosts major sporting events, concerts and conferences, contributing substantially to the regional economy and employment in North West province. The complex was developed in the former Bophuthatswana homeland, where gambling was permitted during apartheid, and opened in 1979. Sun City has undergone continuous expansion and refurbishment, with the Palace of the Lost City added in 1992. The resort's scale and energy demands have made it a focus for renewable energy investment, including solar installations to reduce dependence on Eskom's grid supply.
