Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

South Sudan

South Sudan is a landlocked country in East-Central Africa. The capital is Juba. With a population of about 11-million, South Sudan is one of the world's youngest nations, having gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011, following a referendum. The economy is heavily dependent on oil exports, which account for the majority of government revenue, though production has been disrupted by conflict and infrastructure challenges. Agriculture employs most of the workforce, with subsistence farming predominating. The South Sudanese pound is the national currency. The country operates under a transitional government structure following a 2018 peace agreement. South Sudan is a member of the African Union, the East African Community and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. Since independence, the nation has faced significant challenges including civil war, humanitarian crises, food insecurity and underdeveloped infrastructure. The public-health system remains fragile, with limited capacity to respond to disease outbreaks such as Ebola, which has affected neighbouring countries. Economic development has been constrained by ongoing instability, displacement of populations and reliance on a narrow export base.
