Somaliland
Somaliland is a self-declared independent state in the Horn of Africa that broke away from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognised by the international community, which continues to regard it as an autonomous region of Somalia. The territory covers the former British Somaliland protectorate and has a population of about four million people. Its capital is Hargeisa, and other significant cities include Berbera, a major port on the Gulf of Aden. Somaliland has maintained relative stability, a functioning government, its own currency and security forces, in contrast to the protracted conflict and instability in Somalia proper. The economy relies on livestock exports, remittances from the diaspora, port revenues and trade facilitated by the Port of Berbera, which has attracted foreign investment, notably from the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia. Somaliland's strategic location along key shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has drawn interest from regional and international actors seeking port access and maritime security partnerships. The territory has pursued bilateral agreements with countries including Ethiopia, which signed a memorandum of understanding in 2024 for potential sea access, and has engaged with Israel, the United States, Turkey and others. Despite its quest for recognition, Somaliland's status remains contested, complicating its integration into regional economic blocs and international institutions. The lack of formal recognition limits access to development finance and diplomatic channels, though it continues to operate de facto state institutions.
