SABS
SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) is South Africa's national standards body, responsible for developing, promoting and maintaining technical standards across a wide range of industries and products. Established in 1945, SABS operates under the Standards Act and serves as the country's representative to international standards organisations including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The bureau develops voluntary and compulsory standards covering sectors such as construction, manufacturing, food safety, engineering, chemicals and consumer goods. SABS also provides conformity assessment services, including product testing, certification and inspection, to verify compliance with national and international standards. The organisation's certification marks, particularly the SABS mark, are widely recognised indicators of quality and safety in the South African market. SABS operates testing laboratories and facilities across the country, supporting manufacturers, importers and regulators in ensuring product safety and performance. The bureau plays a critical role in facilitating trade by harmonising South African standards with international norms and providing technical infrastructure for export markets. SABS works closely with industry associations, government departments and technical committees to develop standards that reflect current technology, safety requirements and market needs. In sectors such as water infrastructure, sanitation and construction materials, SABS standards provide the technical benchmarks against which products and systems are evaluated. The organisation also contributes to consumer protection, public health and environmental sustainability through its standards development and certification activities.
