Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

SABC

SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) is South Africa's public broadcaster, operating television and radio services across the country. The corporation runs multiple television channels, including SABC 1, SABC 2 and SABC 3, as well as a network of national and regional radio stations broadcasting in all eleven official languages. SABC is mandated to provide public-service broadcasting that reflects South African society, promotes nation-building and supports cultural diversity. The broadcaster is funded through a combination of television licence fees, advertising revenue and government grants. SABC operates under the oversight of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and reports to Parliament through the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies. The corporation employs thousands of staff across its television, radio, news and technical divisions, with headquarters in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. SABC's news division provides coverage of national and regional events, including business, politics, labour relations and mining developments. The broadcaster has faced ongoing financial and governance challenges in recent years, prompting restructuring efforts and management changes. SABC was established in 1936 as a radio service and expanded into television in 1976, evolving from a state broadcaster into a public corporation following South Africa's democratic transition in the 1990s.
