Rustenburg
Rustenburg is a city in North West province, South Africa, situated about 120 km north-west of Johannesburg. It serves as a major economic hub for the platinum-mining industry and is one of the principal urban centres in the province. The city lies at the heart of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, which contains the world's largest reserves of platinum-group metals. Rustenburg's economy is dominated by mining and related industries, with numerous platinum and chrome operations in the surrounding area. The city is home to a substantial workforce employed in mining, processing and support services. Major mining companies and contractors maintain significant operations and offices in Rustenburg. The city's infrastructure includes residential areas, commercial districts and industrial zones that support the mining sector. Rustenburg has grown rapidly since the mid-twentieth century as platinum mining expanded, transforming from a small agricultural town into a major mining centre. The city's fortunes remain closely tied to global platinum and chrome markets.
