Robert Mugabe
Robert Mugabe was a Zimbabwean revolutionary and politician who served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017. Born in 1924 in Southern Rhodesia, he became a central figure in the liberation struggle against white minority rule, leading the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) during the guerrilla war that culminated in independence in 1980. Initially hailed as a liberation hero and pragmatic leader, Mugabe's tenure grew increasingly authoritarian, marked by political repression, economic mismanagement and human rights abuses. His government oversaw controversial land reform programmes in the early 2000s that redistributed white-owned commercial farms, contributing to sharp economic decline, hyperinflation and international isolation. Mugabe maintained power through a combination of patronage, electoral manipulation and state violence, while his ZANU-PF party entrenched single-party dominance. His rule was characterised by a complex legacy: celebrated by some for ending colonial rule and championing pan-African rhetoric, yet condemned by others for presiding over economic collapse and political repression. In November 2017, following a military intervention and pressure from within ZANU-PF, Mugabe resigned after 37 years in power. He was succeeded by his former deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mugabe died in Singapore in September 2019 at the age of 95, leaving behind a deeply contested legacy in Zimbabwe and across the African continent.
