Oscar Mabuyane
Oscar Mabuyane is the premier of the Eastern Cape province in South Africa. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and has held the premiership since 2019. Mabuyane rose to the position following the resignation of his predecessor, Phumulo Masualle, and was elected by the provincial legislature. His tenure has focused on addressing the province's persistent challenges, including service delivery, unemployment, public health infrastructure and community safety. The Eastern Cape is one of South Africa's poorest provinces, with significant rural populations and underdeveloped infrastructure, making governance particularly complex. Mabuyane has emphasised economic development through sectors such as agriculture, tourism and support for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). Before becoming premier, he served in various provincial government roles, including as a member of the Eastern Cape legislature. His leadership has been marked by efforts to improve the province's fiscal management and attract investment. Mabuyane's administration has faced scrutiny from opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance, over the pace of service delivery and governance issues. He remains a prominent figure in the ANC's Eastern Cape structures and in provincial politics.
