North Darfur
North Darfur is a state in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Its capital is al-Fashir, which serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the state. The state is one of five that make up the broader Darfur region, alongside South Darfur, West Darfur, East Darfur and Central Darfur. North Darfur shares international borders with Libya to the north and Chad to the west, making it strategically significant for cross-border trade and migration routes. The economy is predominantly based on subsistence agriculture, livestock herding and limited trade, with the population facing chronic food insecurity and underdevelopment. The state has been severely affected by the conflict that began in Darfur in 2003, which has resulted in large-scale displacement, humanitarian crises and ongoing instability. North Darfur hosts significant numbers of internally displaced persons and refugees, with humanitarian agencies including the World Food Programme, UNHCR, the International Organisation for Migration, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières maintaining operations in the area. The state has experienced renewed violence in recent years, particularly involving the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other armed groups, further exacerbating public health challenges and food security concerns. North Darfur remains one of the most vulnerable regions in Sudan, requiring sustained international humanitarian assistance.
