Mogalakwena
Mogalakwena is an openpit platinum mine located in Limpopo province, South Africa. The mine is operated by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the world's largest primary producer of platinum-group metals (PGMs). Situated in the Bushveld Complex, approximately 40 km north-west of Mokopane, Mogalakwena is one of the largest and lowest-cost platinum mines globally. The operation extracts ore containing platinum, palladium, rhodium and other PGMs, along with base metals such as nickel and copper. Mogalakwena's scale and mechanised mining methods give it a significant cost advantage over many underground platinum operations in South Africa. The mine employs several thousand people and is a major economic driver in the Limpopo region. Mogalakwena's ore is processed at concentrator plants on site before being sent to smelters and refineries. The mine has undergone continuous expansion since its commissioning, with ongoing investments in mining equipment, processing capacity and infrastructure. Mogalakwena remains a cornerstone asset for Amplats and a key contributor to South Africa's platinum production.
