Makhado
Makhado is a coal mining project located in Limpopo province, South Africa. The project is owned and being developed by MC Mining, a coal producer focused on the South African market. Makhado is designed to produce hard coking coal, a premium metallurgical coal used primarily in steel production. The project sits in the Soutpansberg coalfield in Limpopo and represents one of the few undeveloped hard coking coal resources in South Africa. Development of Makhado has involved environmental approvals, engineering studies and financing arrangements, with the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa among the project's financial backers. The mine is expected to create employment opportunities in Limpopo and contribute to broad-based black economic empowerment objectives. MC Mining has engaged a range of engineering and consulting firms to advance the project through feasibility and construction phases. Once operational, Makhado is intended to supply the domestic steel industry and potentially export markets. The project has been positioned as strategically significant given South Africa's limited hard coking coal production and the steel sector's reliance on imports.
