Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Kallie Kriel

Kallie Kriel is a South African civil rights activist and the chief executive of AfriForum, a civil rights organisation and lobby group that forms part of the Solidarity Movement. He is a prominent figure in South African public discourse, particularly on issues relating to property rights, minority rights and constitutional matters. Kriel has led AfriForum's campaigns against expropriation without compensation and has been vocal in challenging government policies that the organisation views as threatening to property rights and the rule of law. Under his leadership, AfriForum has pursued litigation, international advocacy and public campaigns to advance its positions. He has represented the organisation in engagements with international audiences, including meetings with United States officials, to raise concerns about land reform proposals and related policy developments in South Africa. Kriel's advocacy work has made him a recurring figure in coverage of debates over land reform, constitutional amendments and the balance between redress and property protection. His public profile extends to commentary on governance, corruption and the protection of civil liberties within South Africa's constitutional framework. Before assuming the chief executive role at AfriForum, Kriel held leadership positions within the broader Solidarity Movement, contributing to its strategic direction and public engagement efforts.
