Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and the provincial capital of Gauteng. With a population of more than five-million people in its metropolitan area, it is the country's economic hub and financial centre. The city is often referred to as Joburg, Jozi or eGoli. Johannesburg is not a national or legislative capital but serves as the commercial heart of South Africa, generating a significant portion of the country's gross domestic product. The city is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the largest bourse on the African continent, and hosts the headquarters of most major South African companies and banks. Key industries include finance, professional services, mining services, manufacturing and telecommunications. Johannesburg developed rapidly following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, transforming from a mining camp into a major metropolis within decades. The city's infrastructure includes OR Tambo International Airport, Africa's busiest airport, and an extensive road and rail network. Johannesburg remains central to South Africa's economy and is a focal point for investment, commerce and urban development across the region.
