IEC
The IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) is South Africa's constitutionally mandated body responsible for managing and overseeing free and fair elections at all levels of government. Established in 1993 under the Electoral Commission Act, the IEC operates as an independent institution supporting constitutional democracy, free from political interference or influence. The commission's mandate encompasses the administration of national, provincial and municipal elections, as well as by-elections, ensuring electoral processes comply with South African electoral law and international standards. The IEC is responsible for voter registration, the delimitation of electoral boundaries, voter education programmes, and the accreditation of election observers and party agents. It also adjudicates electoral disputes and manages the logistics of polling stations across the country. The commission is governed by a chairperson and commissioners appointed by the President on the recommendation of the National Assembly. The IEC reports to Parliament and is accountable to the South African public for the integrity and transparency of electoral processes. Since its establishment, the commission has overseen multiple democratic elections, including the historic 1994 elections that marked the end of apartheid. The IEC plays a crucial role in maintaining public confidence in South Africa's democratic institutions and electoral system.
