IDC

The IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) is a South African state-owned development finance institution that promotes economic growth and industrial development. Established in 1940, the corporation operates under the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and is mandated to support entrepreneurship and the creation of sustainable competitive industries and enterprises. The IDC provides financing solutions to businesses across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, mining, agriculture, tourism and renewable energy. It focuses particularly on projects that contribute to job creation, economic empowerment and regional development, with a strong emphasis on supporting small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and black-owned businesses. The corporation offers various financial products, including loans, equity investments and guarantees, tailored to different stages of business development from start-ups to established enterprises. The IDC plays a significant role in catalysing private-sector investment and has been instrumental in funding major industrial projects throughout South Africa and the broader African continent. Its investment decisions are guided by developmental impact criteria alongside commercial viability considerations. The corporation reports to Parliament and is governed by a board of directors appointed by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition. Over its eight decades of operation, the IDC has become one of Africa's largest development finance institutions, with a substantial asset base and a portfolio spanning numerous strategic sectors of the South African economy.
