Geneva
Geneva is a city in Switzerland and serves as the capital of the canton of Geneva. It is located at the south-western tip of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône river exits the lake, and is the country's second-most populous city after Zürich. The city is a major global centre for diplomacy and international cooperation, hosting the European headquarters of the United Nations and numerous international organisations, including the World Health Organisation, the International Labour Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Trade Organization. Geneva's economy is heavily oriented towards services, particularly banking, finance, commodities trading and international diplomacy. The city is also a hub for watchmaking and precision engineering. Its status as a neutral meeting ground has made it a preferred location for international conferences, treaty negotiations and humanitarian initiatives. Geneva's multilingual character reflects its international role, with French as the official language but widespread use of English and other languages in diplomatic and business circles. The city's significance in global health governance and humanitarian affairs ensures its recurring prominence in coverage of international public-health emergencies and multilateral policy developments.
