Duncan Wanblad
Duncan Wanblad is chief executive of Anglo American, the global diversified mining company headquartered in London. He is a South African mining executive with more than three decades of experience in the resources sector. Wanblad was appointed to the top role at Anglo American in April 2022, succeeding Mark Cutifani after serving as chief executive of the company's base metals division. His career at Anglo American began in 2005 when he joined as head of business performance for the base metals unit. Before joining Anglo American, he worked at De Beers and spent time in consulting. Wanblad has overseen Anglo American through a period of strategic repositioning, including decisions around the company's portfolio of assets in South Africa and globally. He holds a degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBA from the University of Cape Town. His leadership has focused on operational efficiency, decarbonisation and navigating commodity price cycles across Anglo American's diversified portfolio, which includes platinum-group metals, diamonds, copper and iron ore. Wanblad is a prominent figure in global mining circles and frequently features in coverage of the sector's response to energy transition and resource nationalism.
