Half of a 300-strong African protection force will arrive in west
Sudan's embattled Darfur region on Saturday, an official with the
African Union said yesterday.
President Thabo Mbeki will head to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today for
the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government Summit which
runs from tomorrow to Thursday, a foreign affairs spokesman said.
The African Union is today due to officially launch its Peace and
Security Council (PSC), the cornerstone of the continental body's
ambitions to be a robust guarantor of stability in Africa.
Sudan will let a UN team into the country within days to probe
alleged atrocities by government-backed militia in the western
Darfur region after initially blocking them, a UN spokesman said
Tuesday.
