Broadband
Broadband is high-speed internet access that provides significantly faster data transmission than traditional dial-up connections, enabling the simultaneous delivery of voice, video and data services. The term refers to telecommunications infrastructure capable of carrying multiple signals and traffic types at once, typically defined by minimum download speeds that vary by jurisdiction but generally exceed several megabits per second. Broadband technologies include fixed-line solutions such as fibre-optic cables, digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modems, as well as wireless options including mobile broadband (3G, 4G and 5G), satellite and fixed wireless access. The availability and quality of broadband infrastructure is widely recognised as a critical enabler of economic development, digital inclusion and competitiveness in the modern economy. Broadband supports essential services including e-commerce, remote education, telemedicine, cloud computing and the deployment of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. International bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union and the World Bank have identified universal broadband access as a key development priority, reflected in targets such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In Africa, broadband deployment remains uneven, with urban areas generally better served than rural regions, and governments and development finance institutions actively investing in backbone infrastructure to close the digital divide. The sector encompasses both state-owned infrastructure providers and private telecommunications operators, with regulatory frameworks governing spectrum allocation, licensing and universal service obligations. Broadband policy debates often centre on affordability, coverage expansion, infrastructure sharing and the respective roles of public and private investment in network rollout.
