Atlantis
Atlantis is an industrial town on the West Coast of South Africa, approximately 40 kilometres north of Cape Town in the Western Cape province. Established in 1976 as part of the apartheid government's industrial decentralisation policy, the town was originally intended to relocate coloured communities from Cape Town and provide employment opportunities in manufacturing. Atlantis developed as a designated industrial development zone with a focus on light manufacturing, textiles and later electronics assembly. The town's economy has historically been anchored by large-scale employers in the manufacturing sector, including electronics and appliance producers. Its strategic location near Cape Town and access to transport infrastructure have made it attractive for companies seeking lower-cost industrial sites while maintaining proximity to the metropolitan market and port facilities. Atlantis has benefited from various government incentives aimed at stimulating industrial investment and job creation in the area. The town continues to serve as an important manufacturing hub in the Western Cape, with ongoing efforts to attract investment in sectors such as green technology and renewable energy manufacturing. Atlantis remains significant in South Africa's industrial landscape as a site for skills development and employment generation, particularly for communities in the northern suburbs of Cape Town.
