Anton Eberhard
Anton Eberhard is a South African energy policy expert and professor emeritus at the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business. He founded and leads the Power Futures Lab, a research initiative focused on electricity sector reform, renewable energy integration and energy policy in Africa. Eberhard is widely recognised as one of South Africa's foremost authorities on electricity markets, independent power production and utility restructuring. His academic work and public commentary have shaped debates on Eskom's operational challenges, the role of independent power producers in South Africa's energy mix, and strategies to address loadshedding. He has advised governments, development finance institutions and private-sector stakeholders across the continent on power-sector reform and investment frameworks. Eberhard's research spans the economics of electricity generation, regulatory design and the transition to cleaner energy systems. He is a frequent contributor to policy discussions convened by bodies such as the National Energy Regulator of South Africa and the Energy Council of South Africa. His career has combined rigorous academic inquiry with practical engagement in South Africa's energy transition, making him a recurring voice in coverage of the country's electricity crisis and the expansion of renewable capacity. Before his current role, Eberhard held senior academic and advisory positions focused on infrastructure and development economics.
