Agro-processing
Agro-processing is the transformation of raw agricultural products into intermediate or finished goods for consumption, further manufacturing or export. The sector encompasses a wide range of activities including milling, canning, freezing, drying, packaging, refining and value-added manufacturing of crops, livestock, fish and forestry products. It forms a critical link between primary agriculture and final consumers, adding value at each stage of the supply chain. Agro-processing spans multiple subsectors such as food and beverage manufacturing, textile production from natural fibres, biofuel production and the processing of hides and skins. The industry plays a significant role in economic development by creating employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas where agricultural production is concentrated. It contributes to food security by extending the shelf life of perishable products and reducing post-harvest losses. Agro-processing activities range from small-scale artisanal operations to large industrial facilities, with technology levels varying from basic manual processing to highly automated production lines. The sector is sensitive to factors including agricultural output, commodity prices, energy costs, logistics infrastructure and access to markets. In many African economies, agro-processing represents a strategic priority for industrialisation and export diversification, leveraging the continent's agricultural resource base. Investment in the sector typically focuses on upgrading technology, improving quality standards, enhancing cold-chain infrastructure and developing regional value chains.
