Zuma appoints new NPA boss

President Jacob Zuma has appointed advocate Shaun Abrahams as the new National Prosecuting Authority boss.

"Advocate Abrahams has 17 years of experience in the prosecution service," Zuma said in a statement.

"During this period, he has accumulated vast experience and has gained impeccable technical expertise. I am confident that he will be able to enhance the efficiency of the National Prosecuting Authority."

Abrahams is a senior state advocate in the priority crimes litigation unit in the office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

The NPA has been through five bosses since 1998 and one acting head.

Former NPA boss Mxolisi Nxasana resigned from his position earlier this month after reportedly receiving a golden handshake.

An inquiry into Nxasana's fitness to hold office was cancelled last month for reasons unknown.
