As we commemorate the 24th anniversary of the assassination of the late General Secretary South African Communist Party (SACP) and Umkhonto Wesizwe Chief of Staff, Cde Chris Thembisile Hani, the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) will undertake a frank assessment of some of the most pressing South African issues that our beloved hero fought for.

By understanding the contradictions of post-1994 South Africa and the world subsequent to the fall of the USSR, the YCLSA is yearning to create a cadreship among its rank and file members that would emulate Hani’s courage to speak truth to power. He understood very well that freedom is the risking of life.

In the midst of the challenges the movement faces, and especially the need to overcome poverty, inequality and unemployment, the YCLSA is constantly faced with a mammoth task to mobilize, organize and educate the entire youth towards a socialist society against all odds. In doing this, we seek to combat corruption and the deliberate weakening of the state by reactionary forces and self-centered political elites and instill a sense of service to the people.

In this Chris Hani Month, all YCLSA structures will be having many activities and programmes around the country to celebrate the life of Cde Chris Hani. This will articulate well with ongoing programmes of the YCLSA in pursuit of a humane and just society.

May the soul of the commander of the people’s army rest in peace.

May his temerity inspire the living soldiers of socialism.
