Hundreds of workers from various unions across the country have taken to the streets of Cape Town to march to Parliament for workers' rights.

Members from Cosatu, NUM, Sactwu and other unions gathered in Kaizergracht to start the protest at around 10:50 on Wednesday.

Cosatu provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich told News24 that the national trade union is marching for better job protection, as well as a better public transport system.

"We're obviously concerned for protecting jobs and the jobs people already have. But we also want to create more jobs," Ehrenreich said.

"We also want better access to healthcare and education, and lastly we want e-tolls stopped.

"A better public transport system must be put in place."

Ehrenreich denied the march was in response to last week's United Against Corruption march, conducted by various civil unions across the country.

Among the demands around the issue of jobs includes the implementation of a national minimum wage.

Marchers wore caps bearing fake South African notes with the words 'national minimum wage' on them.

An estimated 1 000 people started marching at about 11:00.
