WC: Construction of Thembalethu Community Day Centre begins

The construction of a much-needed community day centre in Thembalethu, George has begun. The R66 million facility was commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) for the Western Cape Department of Health. If everything goes according to plan, the facility will be completed in November 2017. This project helps to give effect to the Healthcare 2030 aim of providing high-quality health facilities at district hospital and primary healthcare level.

Work on the facility includes the building of an infectious disease unit, chronic care unit, acute treatment unit and a pharmacy. The facility will also make provision for oral health, women and child health, and rehabilitation and therapy services. The single story facility is expected to promote efficient healthcare, with low maintenance. There will be easy access to service in roof spaces. Green features include natural ventilation and light, rainwater harvesting and low energy and technology.

The DTPW continues to create Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities through its infrastructure and related projects. A total of 14% of the contract amount will be spent on targeted enterprises, 9% on suppliers and manufactures and 4% on local labour from the Eden district.

The Western Cape Government’s Provincial Strategic Goal 1 aims to improve wellness in the province. By delivering quality health facilities, on time, where they are needed most, the DTPW is living its mission of delivering infrastructure and services to promote positive socio-economic outcomes and safe, empowered and connected communities.
