UASA welcomes the new Gauteng e-toll dispensation as announced by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa this afternoon, but we do have reservations.

The introduction of a national fuel levy would have been the preferred option to raise funds for the upkeep of South Africa’s roads from an affordability point of view.

While toll fees for light motor vehicles will be reduced by almost 50% - from 58c/km to 30c/km – over the next three months, UASA believes it is an expensive and not the most effective way of raising the necessary funds. The e-toll system remains one of the most costly methods to do so.

Because of the legacy of insufficient and improper consultation which led to the e-toll debacle in the first place, and which has been enhanced by the paternalistic attitude of certain political leaders, it remains to be seen if Gauteng citizens will now comply and start paying e-toll fees.
