The gig economy: A challenge for the trade union movement

In this week’s article, Sofia Scasserra focuses on the challenges posed by the ecommerce sector or the gig economy on the labour movement.

Scasserra shows that the gig economy has been attractive to the youth and vulnerable groups who are having difficulties in attaining jobs. While the gig economy seems as a way out for such workers, it comes at a ‘cost of workers’ rights and working conditions.’ She proposes twelve key demands that trade unions need to champion for the interests of the workers in this sector.
