TAC: Comrade Kathrada has left us with a broken heart

Today we mourn the passing of our leader Ahmed Kathrada – a true revolutionary and stalwart of the liberation struggle. His devotion and dedication as a freedom fighter will never be forgotten. The Treatment Action Campaign sends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Kathrada in this sad time.

“Our freedom did not fall from the sky. It was won through the tireless efforts of many great leaders - like comrade Kathrada - who gave up their lives and families to fight against the evils of apartheid,” said Anele Yawa, TAC General Secretary. “Even after 26 years in prison, comrade Kathrada’s spirit was never broken by this barbaric regime. Instead he re-joined us in the ranks, standing alongside millions of other oppressed people at the front line in the continued struggle against colonialism and apartheid.”

“In speaking truth to power, comrade Kathrada led and inspired so many freedom fighters over the years. His steadfast commitment to freedom, justice and equality remained to his death as he continued to speak out against injustices such as the scourge of state capture today. Tragically before his death he witnessed our hard won freedom being auctioned off to the highest bidder. We must defend what he fought for.”

Rest in Power comrade Kathy. We salute you. Your contribution to the liberation struggle will never be forgotten.
