South Africa’s water woes impede students’ education

Not only are there multiple provinces and towns in the country struggling to provide South Africans with their Constitutional right to sufficient water; J.B. Marks municipality’s failure to maintain its water supply infrastructure has led to at least a week of canceled classes at the North West University campus in Potchefstroom.

While the DA commends the University for putting measures in place to ensure that students can continue their studies online, as well as providing water to students, we call on the Office of the Speaker to reconsider our request for an urgent debate of national importance on the expanding water crisis.

ANC and ANC coalition-led municipalities across South Africa are struggling to provide basic services. Their ineptitude is now going so far as to endanger the lives of those residents unfortunate enough to live outside competently run DA-led municipalities.

The DA calls on all students registered to vote to draw on their lived experiences and vote for a better future come 29 May.
