 South Africa’s confirmed Covid-19 cases rise to 726 823, deaths to 19 411

As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 726,823, with 1371 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 135, bringing the total to 19,411, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.

The provincial breakdown was as follows:

Eastern Cape – 97,021 (13.3 percent)

Free State – 57,058 (7.9)

Gauteng – 228,948 (31.5)

KwaZulu-Natal – 123,257 (17.0)

Limpopo – 17,624 (2.4)

Mpumalanga – 29,865 (4.1)

North West – 33,451 (4.6)

Northern Cape – 22,007 (3.0)

Western Cape – 117,592 (16.2 percent)

Unknown – 0 (0.0)

A total of 4,842,516 tests had been processed to date, of which 19,543 had been conducted since the previous report on Saturday.

“Regrettably, we report 135 Covid-19-related deaths today [Sunday] – 22 from the Eastern Cape, two from the Free State, 107 from Gauteng, and four from the Western Cape. This brings the total number of Covid-19-related deaths to 19,411.”

Of the 135 deaths reported on Sunday, eight were reported to have occurred in the past 24-48 hours – one in the Eastern Cape, one in the Free State, three in Gauteng, and three in the Western Cape. The recoveries now stood at 655,330, which translated to a recovery rate of 90 percent, Mkhize said.

The provincial breakdown was as follows:

Eastern Cape – 3703 deaths, 89,815 recoveries, and 3503 active cases

Free State – 1509 deaths, 42,878 recoveries, and 12,671 active cases

Gauteng – 4828 deaths, 208,385 recoveries, and 15,735 active cases

KwaZulu-Natal – 3225 deaths, 112,920 recoveries, and 7112 active cases

Limpopo – 458 deaths, 16,588 recoveries, and 578 active cases

Mpumalanga – 605 deaths, 28,559 recoveries, and 701 active cases

North West – 452 deaths, 29,383 recoveries, and 3616 active cases

Northern Cape – 266 deaths, 18,087 recoveries, and 3654 active cases

Western Cape – 4365 deaths, 108,715 recoveries, and 4512 active cases
