|Solidarity: Statement by Gideon du Plessis, Solidarity General Secretary, condemns violence during truck driver strike (28/09/2012)|
Solidarity today strongly condemned the violence that took place during the truck drivers’ strike.
Gideon du Plessis, General Secretary of Solidarity, said violence, looting, vandalism and intimidation during strikes are unacceptable and criminal charges should be brought against those responsible for such acts. He said Solidarity strongly condemns criminal behaviour that takes place under the guise of a strike. ‘In the eyes of the public, violent strikes detract from the credibility of legal and peaceful strikes and trade unions in general. Solidarity further maintains that strikes ought to be a last resort and efforts should be made to negotiate peacefully instead.’
Solidarity’s members are not involved in the strike.
