SANRAL: Statement by South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited, astonished by OUTA entering the political fray in defence of the DA (25/08/2013)

25th August 2013

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited is surprised by the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance jumping to the defence of the Democratic Alliance in light of recent criticism of the political party.

This defence confirms SANRAL’s suspicion that OUTA is itself aligned to the DA.

SANRAL stands by its statement that it will not bedrawn into cheap politics and mudslinging with the DA as this will further pollute an already highly politicized communications environment.

The road users are not interested in the politics but the facts, which SANRAL has continuously provided.  All the issues raised in their statement -the R450 monthly cap on e-tolls, the relationship between ETC and Kapsch and the sale of e-tags, have been adequately clarified and the media have reported on these extensively following a roundtable we held recently.

"As for OUTA's Wayne Duvenhage, he comes across as an inept hustler with most of his assertions about road funding sounding like fish market gossip. He has never built a centimetre of a road and relies on research on the back of a matchbox for his compendium of emotional and irrational statements about road funding - which unfortunately have fooled some. He may know how to rent outcars but that is not the same as road construction and funding. SANRAL cannot experiment with the country's national roads on the basis of unscientific and unanchored statements by an aspirant 'road expert' like Mr Duvenhage," says SANRAL's head of communications Vusi Mona.

SANRAL will meet OUTA in court next month. For now, the Agency will remain squarely focused on executing its mandate, which is to manage the entire road network of South Africa.
