The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) will on Tuesday make a submission to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Labour on the National Minimum Wage Bill and amendments to labour laws.

Saftu has dismissed the proposed R20 an hour, or R3 500 a month, minimum wage and sees it as an "entrenchment of the apartheid wage structure".

The federation further believes that a national minimum wage will keep millions of workers trapped in poverty.

Saftu will be represented on Tuesday by it first deputy president Nomvume Ralarala, general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and Western Cape provincial secretary Andre Adams.

The implementation of the national minimum wage was set for implementation on May 1, but has been delayed. Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant explained at a press briefing in March that this was because of parliamentary processes which required time.
