SADTU IN THE EASTERN CAPE TO HONOUR MEMBERS FOR THE IMPROVED 2018 MATRIC RESULTS.

7th February 2019

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) in the Eastern Cape will, on Saturday, honour members who attained above 80% in the subjects they teach in the 2018 National Senior Certificate examinations. The teachers will be feted at a gala event to be held at the ICC in East London.

Explaining the rationale behind the event, SADTU Eastern Cape Secretary Chris Mdingi said the project began last year when the province honoured 111 member teachers who had attained above 80% pass in the subjects they teach in matric.

According to Mdingi, this year, 300 member teachers will be honoured. These will include not only subject teachers but school principals, special schools, best performing regions and the broader GET sector as well.

The Eastern Cape has, over the past two years, shown steady improvement in the matric pass rate. In 2017, the Province attained a 65, 8% pass, an increase of more than 5% from 2016’s 59, 3%. In 2018, the Province achieved a 71, 4% an improvement of 5, and 6% from 2017.

“Very little is said when teachers do well. Teachers are criticized all the time forgetting the conditions they work under. We decided to continue with what we started last year to show appreciation and encourage teachers who are our members to improve and sustain the quality of education,” Mdingi said.

The event will take place as follows:

Date: Saturday, 9 February 2019

Venue: ICC, East London

Time: 9am

The media are invited to attend and cover the event.
