SA: Statement by the Western Cape Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Minister Alan Winde welcomes Two Oceans runners to the Western Cape Town (16/04/2014)

More than 30 000 runners will gather at the starting point for the Two Oceans Marathon this weekend.
Alan Winde, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, welcomed runners to the Western Cape for the 45th edition of the event.

Dubbed the “world’s most beautiful marathon”, the half and full marathon takes place on Saturday (19 April).
The theme for this year’s event, “Designed to Run” is a nod to Cape Town’s hosting of the World Design Capital 2014.
“The Two Oceans Marathon is an important fixture on our events calendar and generates in excess of R200 million for our GDP. Big events are important economic drivers. In the 2012/2013 year, major events generated R1.3 billion for the regional economy,” said Minister Winde.

The Western Cape Government is contributing R350 000 to the event. Western Cape Government staff and learners from our Mass Opportunity Development (MOD) Centres will also man refreshment stations.

Minister Winde said it was extra special that the Two Oceans Marathon coincided with the Easter weekend.
“This will be a bumper weekend for our tourism industry. I’d like to encourage visitors from outside the Western Cape and international tourists to enjoy all our province has to offer,” said Minister Winde.
