SA: Statement by the Presidency on President Jacob Zuma’s working visit to Zimbabwe (16/03/2010)
President Jacob Zuma arrived at Harare International Airport at 18h00 this evening for a two-day working visit (17-18 March 2010). He was met at the airport by President Robert Mugabe.
President Zuma is in Zimbabwe to discuss the issues which still hinder the full implementation of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) signed by Zanu-PF, MDC-T and MDC-M in September 2008.
South Africa was appointed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to facilitate the resolution of obstacles hindering the full implementation of the agreement.
President Zuma will begin his working visit with a briefing from the facilitation team he set up on the progress of the negotiations.
The facilitation team, led by the President's political advisor, Charles Nqakula, arrived in Harare on Monday (15 March) and held a meeting with the negotiators of the three parties to establish a framework for the President's discussions.
President Zuma will tomorrow (17 March) hold bilateral meetings with each of the three political principals of the GPA signatory parties, followed by a plenary meeting with all three.
